RSA supports the upgrade of Thurlow Park Road and Elmcourt libraries

2 Feb 2012 6:33PM

The RSA has provided £3,000 to support the upgrade of Elmcourt and Thurlow Park Road libraries. A significant part of the donation will go towards purchasing the ‘Junior Librarian’ system, which will make it easier for children to take books from the library, to collect information about children’s reading patterns, and to use this to analyse and direct children’s reading. The new system will be an integral part of a more significant cataloguing, destocking and restocking exercise that will be take place over the coming year. The RSA is delighted to support this initiative; there will be further information from Mr Bray in due course.

Success in the Alleyns Football Tournament

31 Jan 2012 6:56PM

The Year 3’s journeyed to Alleyns on a frosty Monday afternoon. The group stages saw us undefeated against St. Paul’s, St. Dunstan’s, Blackheath and Alleyns, with 2 wins and 2 draws respectively. The semi-final, against Eltham College went into gruelling extra time and when neither team were able to score, the dreaded penalties were on the cards. Khalil slotted his very efficiently and Benjy saved the replying penalty. The Eltham goal keeper then saved a sharp chance from Archie and the Eltham striker scored to even things up. Louie stepped up and calmly put us back in the lead. Benjy held firm against the last penalty and we were through to the final against St. Paul’s, who we had drawn against earlier in the competition. The final score was 2 – 0 so we were the runners-up for the day, a feat not seen in an Alleyns tournament in recent history. Congratulations to Louie, Benjy, Khalil, Archie, Kai, Dan, Danny, Levi, George and Finlay for a great achievement.

Many thanks to Tracy Laughton for organising the start of term uniform sale. Thank you also to all the parents who helped to set up and run the event with Tracy, and to those who came and purchased uniform and ski-gear. The event was well-attended and raised £350 for the RSA. Our next uniform sale will be at the Summer Fair on 23rd June.

English Primary Schools Chess Championship

29 Jan 2012 10:09PM

Congratulations to members of our two Under 9 chess teams who played in the first round of the English Primary Schools Chess Championship at Eltham College on Sunday 29th January. For some of the children this was their first experience of a tournament and they faced stiff competition, notably from Dulwich and Eltham Colleges. All the children held their own very well and there was some promising play. The children making up the teams were Zubayr, Athena, Louis, Sam M., Martha, David P., Stanley, James K., Baruch and Tawana. By the end of the day everyone was playing much better chess than at the beginning. The children behaved beautifully and we are very grateful to the parents who supported us and kept the children amused when they were not playing.
