French Assembly
20 Mar 2009 2:09PM
Today, four of our year 6 children went to each classroom at TPR to tell them about la Francophonie. We learnt that the Francophonie world comprises more than 40 colonies worldwide. We learnt about the number of people speaking France around the world and the particular countries in which French is spoken.
The assembly took 2 minutes and 59 seconds to present. It was a whistle–stop tour of the French world, and the children did it marvellously!

Swimming gala
On Thursday 19th March the Rosemead swimming team went to Dulwich college swimming pool to compete in a gala against Dulwich College and St Benedict’s. Years 3 to 6 represented Rosemead well. The swimming squad is now so big we had enough swimmers to put 2 children in each race. Dulwich College have always beaten us before but only just beat us this time! Next time Rosemead will hopefully beat them. We did ever so well and came a close second with 188 points after Dulwich College who won with 197. St Benedict’s came third. Rosemead should be very proud as they have done very well. I would like to thank Miss King, Mr Gallagher, Mrs Nicholson, Ms Borny and all the parents for cheering us on. I would also like to thank Mrs Simpson for coaching us.

Cake Sale – Monday, 23rd March
It's that time already! We're having cake sales on both sites after pick-up on Monday 23rd March. Please bake or buy over the weekend (house points at stake at TPR). All donations are much appreciated. Remember to leave out the nuts, as some of our children have allergies. Cakes can be handed into the school offices on Monday morning, please label the boxes. We always need lots of helpers, so please come a few minutes earlier than usual to help set up and sell. At TPR we return the boxes to the shed in the playground for collection. Thanks very much.
ISA Music Event
16 Mar 2009 12:26PM
For 56 pupils of Rosemead Preparatory School in West Dulwich, March 3, 2009 will be a night they remember for the rest of their lives. For on that evening, the Rosemead musicians joined almost 500 pupils from 15 member schools at the Fairfield Hall in Croydon to celebrate music within the Independent Schools Association.
The high standard of performance in The Musical Extravaganza was all the more extraordinary, given that the musicians had met each other only at 1pm that day.
The event, the brainchild of Geoffrey Barham, the head master of Collingwood School, included a 500-voice massed choir, string ensemble, chamber choir, and soloists. These were supported by the festival musicians, an ensemble of the music directors from the participating schools.
Mr Barham, who is retiring from teaching this year, came up with the idea of an ISA London South concert about three years ago, but the preparations began in earnest last year. He was conscious that ISA schools often meet to compete, but rarely to celebrate. This was, he thought, something that needed changing.
“I was absolutely thrilled by how it all came together,” he said. “And really, it did come together on the day. It was a real team effort, and showed just how much the music directors had put into their preparations.”
Rosemead’s pupils made a huge contribution to the success of the evening. A total of 45 pupils took part in the massed choir of 500 voices, performing a challenging and eclectic range of music. Particular highlights were Gaudeamus Hodie, Stars – performed in flickering torchlight – and You Raise Me Up.
Seven Rosemead pupils also participated in a strings ensemble of about 50 musicians. Although Sara Holmes, Rosemead’s Director of Music, had rehearsed with the children extensively at school, they met the other string players only at 1pm.
“All the children who took part, whether in the choir, string group or band, managed to put in so much independent study to learn 12 songs and eight string pieces, so it was really heads down from the beginning of what is a very busy term, particularly for the Year 6,” she said. “It was, however, worth every minute of hard work as the children were thrilled by being part of such an extravaganza!”
Rosemead’s Electric Fusion Band was one of the highlights of the whole evening. The band - two guitars, two drummers, two clarinets, two trumpets, two saxophones, two violins, a cello and trombone – almost brought the house down with its performance of Peter Gun and the theme from James Bond.
As Emilia - a Year 6 pupil, who sang in the choir and played in both the string ensemble and the band - puts it: “I think the best part of performance was the Electric Fusion Band. I think we sounded great and so did the audience. We rocked the show!!!”
The penultimate song of the evening was “Where do we go from here?” - a question many proud parents could easily have answered at the end of the concert. As the 500 ISA pupils launched into their joyous Beatles medley, they could not help but join in.

Book Week
16 Mar 2009 4:29AM
The year 6 children visited Elmcourt for some shared reading during Book Week. This has become a traditional part of Book Week, and is something enjoyed very much by both the Elmcourt children and the year 6 children.
We also have a picture of the staff at Elmcourt. Another tradition which has developed is that the staff perform a piece in character for the children. Again, there appears to be much delight on both sides!
