Last Saturday was the U11 National Counties Zonal qualifying event. Both Hector and Raphael were representing Kent. The event comprised of teams of 24 players. Raphael played board 2 and scored 2½ out of 3 and Hector played board 8 and scored 3 out of 3. Kent finished first beating last year’s national champions Barnet convincingly into second place. Well done to Hector and Raphael who will be representing Kent in the national finals in a few months time.

Angharad J. played in the Kent U9's squad on March 14th in Nottingham and the team came 2nd. She and Alannah A. are playing in the Kent Girls U11 on the 28th in Bolton so best of luck to both of them.

End of term letter

27 Mar 2009 2:33PM

end_of_term.jpg

Dear Parents,

As I sit here, the School is unusually quiet, especially after the wonderful Easter Bonnet parades earlier in the day. Photographic memories will soon be appearing on the website for you to view of this colourful and creative event. Now only a small number of staff remain in the building as most of you have left to start the Easter holiday.

Our end of term assembly was one of mixed emotions as we came together to celebrate the successes and say our goodbyes to two of our pupils and staff. Zac at TPR and Joshua at EC leave us to move to the country, and both Mr Edwards and Miss Wilkinson will soon be moving back to Australia. We wish all of them every happiness in their new homes and schools, and trust that they will keep in touch.

As we say goodbye to the teachers, we also want to express our thanks for all that they have brought to the school during their tenure at Rosemead. Miss Wilkinson leaves us after four and half years and she will be greatly missed by both the children and the staff. We are grateful to Mr Edwards for staying on beyond the summer term and taking a class on into year 4.

Celebrations included news of senior school destinations for year 6 pupils, some merits and the all important house point totals (well done Tudor!). We also sent best wishes, via Miss Wilkinson, to Miss Ansell who is getting married this Saturday.

I wish you all a very peaceful and enjoyable Easter holiday and look forward to seeing a number of you when I join the skiers in Arosa next week. (I notice that my arrival will be just in time for the disco so will be ready to join in the fun right from the start!)

Best wishes,

Mrs Brown and Mrs Sherwood

Rosemead Football & Netball Seasons Finish off Strongly

It’s been an incredibly busy season for all our footballers and netballers this year, and the season finished off as strong as ever. We had two year 3&4 football teams acquit themselves excellently against Oakfield on Monday afternoon. Both matches were very close, and really could have swung either way, but we were unlucky to narrowly lose both games.

netball.jpg

Then on Thursday our year 6 netball team had their last ever Rosemead netball fixture at an excellent tournament at Royal Russell School. The standard was very high, and our girls were no exception to that. They produced some of the finest netball we’ve seen all year and played extremely well, finishing up in 4th place overall.

A huge well done to all the girls and boys who have played and trained really well all season. We have continued to strive forward, and have improved greatly throughout the year. We look forward to further successes in our summer sports next term!

Bike Training Summer Term

27 Mar 2009 2:10PM

Dear year 6 parents,

I have been asked by the Cycling Training UK to cancel the bike doctor which was to be held on 20th April. They will still need to bring their bikes in to be checked, however, this will now take place in the half hour before your 1st lesson.

This should actually make life easier for everyone involved. We may be able to have a bike doctoring session for the community later in the term. I will keep you posted.

I will inform you and your child when their day and time will be, as soon as I have sorted out the details. This will be no later than Wednesday 22nd April, 2 days after we return, but may be even sooner.

I trust that this is all right and thank you for your swift responses and support.

Yours sincerely,

Tim Harrison – PE Teacher

Mrs Hollingworth's Dance Demonstration - 21st March

Many thanks to all the parents for their donations towards Mrs Hollingworth's thank you gifts and a particularly big thank you to the mums who helped collect. With the collection, I bought two bouquets, a bottle of champagne, a bottle of red wine and a box of chocolates. These were presented in two lots at the end of each demonstration by Izzy, Rachel, Kiara, Edith and Elissa - thank you to you all for doing such a splendid job!

Thank you too to all the dancers for putting on such a fantastic display!

Easter Bonnet Parade

22 Mar 2009 12:57PM

easter_bonnets_1.JPG

On Friday, 27th March, we will be holding our annual Easter Bonnet Parade. For those of you who are new to Rosemead, the Easter Bonnet Parade is an important tradition in the school. Each year, all the children and staff arrive on the last morning of the Spring Term sporting their creations. Bonnets can be made out of anything you like. They usually hold a liberal sprinking of chicks and mini eggs, as well as flowers. Each year, however, there are those who take the road less travelled and come in with the most unusual creations. If you have not made your mind up yet as to what sort of bonnet your child/ren will be wearing, maybe the photo above will give you some ideas.

It really is a great day and the most tremendous fun for all!

African Dance Workshop

22 Mar 2009 12:37PM

african_dance.jpg

Read some of the children's notes about their African Dance Workshop they had on Thursday. These are going to be passed on to those led the workshops. Clearly the children had great fun...

Thank you for an amazing lesson on dance, (like no other one I have had!). I think you have an amazing talent! Keep up the good work! Ella M.

The best part of the African Dance was when we jumped up and shouted AFRICA!! We all thought the dancing was GREAT! THANKS! Robin

My favourite part was when we performed the dance. I really enjoyed learning the moves as it was exciting and energetic. And a complete change to our normal dances. Zahra

The best bit about the African Dance was when we sat down and slid cross the floor. Finlay

I really enjoyed the African Dance! My best part was when we had to do the jump called 'Africa' and the dance routine. Ella H.

My favourite part of the African Dance Workshop was when we slid on the floor. It was really fun and it's one of the few times we're actually allowed to slide on the floor in school uniform! Elena

Year 5 Residential Trip

22 Mar 2009 12:18PM

iow_coast.JPG

On Monday, 9th March, we went to the Isle of Wight. We went on the coach for a two hour drive until we got to the ferry. We stayed at a four-star hotel called Ashleigh House. We had dormitories. I was with Niamh, Eve and Rosie.

My first favourite thing that we did is the model village. I loved it because everything was tiny and really cute. There were little people playing football. There were little people playing instruments and if you listened, you could hear music. There was a little church, where little people were getting married. It was incredibly cute. I took so many pictures. I am probably going to hang them in my room.

My second favourite thing that we did in the Isle of Wight is the sweet factory. We were shown how to make traditional humbug sweets. I thought it was very interesting. I never knew how to make sweets, but now I do. After that, we went to buy some sweets in the factory shop. I bought mix for me and my brother and Rhubarb and Custard.

My third favourite thing in the Isle of Wight is the Walzing Waters. I loved it. The Walzing Waters were coloured waters doing pretty patterns. I thought it was something different, but very good as well.

I enjoyed the Isle of Wight a lot. I loved the disco. It was very good as well, but those three things I thought were best.

Polly – 5W

My favourite bit of the Isle of Wight was going to the Dinosaur Isle. It was a museum all about dinosaurs. There were lots of differnt types of skulls and there was a big T–Rex skull and I stuck my head in it. That is my favourite bit about Dinosaur Isle.

My second favourite bit is going to the model village. I liked that so much because there were little thatched cottages and there were shops, and if you looked very carefully, you could see little things on sale in there! I really can't think how they got them in there though.

My third favourite thing is the glass factory. It was really interesting about how they made all the bowls and vases. A man led us through how you made a vase. The colour you put on vases is actually natural powder!

I enjoyed the Isle of Wight because we did so many things. These are all things we did: the coastal walk, we went to Alum Bay, the Needles, the sweet factory, Dinosaur Isle, fossil hunting, the gardens, the playground, Walzing Waters, the disco, the Planetarium, the Aquarium, the model village, the buffet, the pier head and the ferry. I learnt loads and loads. I loved it!

Josie – 5W

These are just two examples of writing the children in year 5 have done about their residential trip. Clearly everyone involved had tremendous fun. Many thanks to all the staff for preparing such a wonderful trip for all the children. I know that many of the year 4 children can't wait until it's their turn next year!

French Assembly

20 Mar 2009 2:09PM

french_0309.JPG

Today, four of our year 6 children went to each classroom at TPR to tell them about la Francophonie. We learnt that the Francophonie world comprises more than 40 colonies worldwide. We learnt about the number of people speaking France around the world and the particular countries in which French is spoken.

The assembly took 2 minutes and 59 seconds to present. It was a whistle–stop tour of the French world, and the children did it marvellously!

Swimming gala

On Thursday 19th March the Rosemead swimming team went to Dulwich college swimming pool to compete in a gala against Dulwich College and St Benedict’s. Years 3 to 6 represented Rosemead well. The swimming squad is now so big we had enough swimmers to put 2 children in each race. Dulwich College have always beaten us before but only just beat us this time! Next time Rosemead will hopefully beat them. We did ever so well and came a close second with 188 points after Dulwich College who won with 197. St Benedict’s came third. Rosemead should be very proud as they have done very well. I would like to thank Miss King, Mr Gallagher, Mrs Nicholson, Ms Borny and all the parents for cheering us on. I would also like to thank Mrs Simpson for coaching us.

Netballers gain valuable end of season victory

Well done to all our netballers this week. We had two teams who competed very well against Alleyn’s on Tuesday afternoon, following a well–deserved victory against Oakfield on Monday. A huge well done to everyone who’s taken part in netball this term!

Rosemead shine at Indoor Athletics Event

We enjoyed a great afternoon of athletics on Wednesday at the ISA event held at Riverston School. Our girls team finished 3rd overall, while the boys finished 4th. Well done to all who took part: Tejan, Jussi, Miles, Adam, Cameron M, Tom H, Toto, Savannah, Elena, Anna, Florence and Hannah. Particular congratulations to Anna and Elena, who both achieved gold in their respective events!

Nail-biting evening at Swimming Gala

We had an incredible evening at our triangular swimming gala on Thursday night. Rosemead did fantastically well, and were agonisingly close to snatching victory. Well done to everyone!
